THE NODDING OF THE PUMP JACKS

Selected excerpt:
...here are ancient icons. Landmarks from the past, monuments to something other. They stand in defiance of modernity, and exist in near-permanence as symbols for that which is not anthropic. Gaze onto them as portraits of America—powerful, democratic, free. Stop not along the way to count the derricks. Close your eyes at the nodding of the pump jacks. Turn not to the punctured bedrock for core-holes and tailing piles. Look past the gestures of prospect and lay eyes upon that which is unbroken.
